20 Gaming Facts That Will RUIN Your Favourite Franchise
8. Developers Studied Real Gore - Dead Space
From the moment that players set foot on the USG Ishimura as ill-fated protagonist Isaac Clarke, Dead Space becomes a terrifying survival horror ordeal. The setting is claustrophobic, the atmosphere is oppressive, and everything is heightened further by its visceral level of violence.
Not only did this game tap into grotesque body horror, with players required to strategically dismember enemies to defeat them, but Isaac could be brutally killed in over 50 unique death animations. To ensure that these moments were as impactful as possible, the developers put an immense amount of detail and effort into creating the gore.
To achieve this level of sickening fidelity, Dead Space creator and executive producer Glen Schofield stated that the team studied pictures of car crash victims and war scenes.
Speaking in an interview with Edge Magazine, Schofield explained that the macabre images were used to make the carnage look convincing. He went on to say that he even rejected the team's first attempts at designing corpses because they looked "cheap and unrealistic."
The developers' commitment paid off. The original Dead Space remains one of the most disturbing sci-fi horrors of all time, with only the recent remake matching its intensity.
