The Legend Of Zelda is one of the most beloved video game franchises ever made, giving players decades of acclaimed instalments including Ocarina Of Time, Majora's Mask, and Breath Of The Wild. Although these titles are known for their innovative gameplay and endearing charm, the series' tangled timeline makes understanding its chronology a near-impossible task.

Despite Nintendo claiming to have a "confidential document" that connected the timeline, they were infamously secretive about it, leaving it up to fans to figure out how Link's adventures pieced together. Nintendo wouldn't unveil an official timeline until the release of the encyclopedia Hyrule Historia in 2011.

While this allowed readers to pore over every detail, it came with one major caveat. Series producer Eiji Aonuma noted in a disclaimer that "Zelda games have been developed with the top priority of focusing on the game mechanics rather than the story." In other words, nothing was supposed to be set in stone.

This sentiment has been echoed in the years since, with the later Hyrule Encyclopedia retconning major events and Tears Of The Kingdom even breaking established lore.

As phenomenal as this franchise is, understanding its timeline is futile.
