17 Gaming Secrets Only Losers Discover

4. Rosella's Forced Marriage (King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella)

King’s Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella follows the titular Princess of Daventry as she traverses a Medieval fantasy world in search of magical fruit that can prevent her father’s death. Along the way, she contends with wicked fairy Lolotte and her son, Edgar, who has romantic feelings for her.

At one point, Rosella is held prisoner by Lolotte so that Rosella can marry Edgar. The lovelorn lad even gives Rosella a rose and – curiously – a gold key that she plans to use to escape her fate.

It's possible for Rosella to get caught as she flees, though, resulting in her being detained in Edgar’s room without the gold key. Consequently, we see the pair tying the knot, and once that’s done, Edgar kisses his new bride and she faints. This leads to new dialogue boxes that declare:

"Fainting isn’t going to help, Rosella. . . . You’re stuck being Mrs. Edgar for the rest of your life. Not to mention having old Lolotte for a mother-in-law! Good luck . . . you’re going to need it!"

Finally, an animated version of game designer/writer Roberta Williams says, “Thank you for playing King’s Quest IV, ‘The Perils of Rosella.’ Next time . . . be more careful!” while prompting players to either “restore,” “restart,” or “quit.”

Oops.
