Blizzard's Overwatch quickly became one of the biggest games in the world when it hit screens a decade ago. From the remnants of international task force Overwatch rise a few remaining figures willing to put their necks on the line to reinstate the organisation and thwart the shady forces behind its disbandment.
It’s not an especially new or innovative premise, but it was enough to get us invested, and the gameplay took care of the rest, with epic, multiplayer running, gunning, survival and high scores. Selecting our heroes from a massive roster, each with their own unique abilities and classes, we spun, jumped, shot and sprang into action sixty years into Earth’s future, where every quirk and niche of the playable characters made for truly unique gaming experiences.

The player base grew toxic very quickly in Overwatch, and for a teamwork-based online game, this is a death knell. But the thing that really put people off was the extensive use of – you guessed it – microtransactions. While the game started out with minor loot box action, as its popularity grew, Blizzard scaled it to a battle pass system, while simultaneously failing to deliver on PvE story content, representing a sorry waste of what could have been.
