20 Most Addictive Video Games Of The Decade (So Far)
9. Thumper
For a few months in 2015, the industry was trying to convince us that rhythm games were coming back. Not only did Rock Band and Guitar Hero get new instalments, but Amplitude did too. It was 2007 all over again.
Obviously, none of those caught on, yet one year later we saw an altogether more demonic take on the genre boot the doors in, its tendrils pulling anyone within eyeshot ever closer for a real good look. "This is the power of controlling music in a video game" Thumper appeared to say, before detonating one of the most enrapturing and downright gnarly sets of gameplay features in recent memory.
Comprised only of shifting between 'lanes' and nailing specific beats on cue, Thumper takes on a life of its own when you don a good pair of headphones. The bass slams you in the gut, the metallic clang of percussion ringing in your ears - if you let it, Thumper can completely take you over in a way that barely feels as though you've got any real control at all.
If Hotline Miami is a dopamine rush, Thumper is a wall of death meeting in the middle of a mosh pit during a Dance with the Dead gig.
