Star Wars video games come in many shapes and sizes, and while there have been some duds – usually the titles that directly adapt the films – some have risen far above the source material and entered into the annals of video game legend. And then there are games like Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles.

While far from being Jedi: Fallen Order, Knights of the Old Republic, or Battlefront II, Jedi Power Battles is its own brand of brilliant. Taking charge of Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Mace Windu and several other Jedi Council members, we tackle the broad story of Phantom Menace, with a heavy focus on, well, battles. It’s fast, it’s fierce, and it was a great Star Wars party game of days gone by. But it was not without fault.

Thus, when we heard Aspyr were remastering it for seventh- and eighth-gen consoles, we were ready to be wowed. But what we got last year was the same old glitchy, infuriating game it has always been – now with added frustrations. This was an opportunity to fix the issues (getting caught on textures and dying, going offscreen and dying, zero depth perception, no-strategy combat against Darth Maul – and dying), but instead they just ported the game to current consoles, touched up the graphics ever so slightly and charged £15-20 for the privilege. This is a game that makes sense on PlayStation 1 and a CRT TV, not PS5 and a 4K.
