19 Things Video Game Fans Are SICK Of
10. Overcorrecting Sequels
No-one enjoys being criticized, but some developers react so strongly to criticism that their fixes end up shattering parts of the game that weren't broken.
Our first example of this tendency involves another appearance from Borderlands 4. The prior game in the series had an extremely grating sense of humour, acting like the video game equivalent of a friend-of-a-friend who shows up to your party, announces "I'm mad, me!" and proceeds to annoy the hell out of everyone with wretched attempts at banter. Borderlands 4, however, moves so far in the other direction that by the time credits roll you'll be hard pressed to remember any of the game's attempts at humour.
It's even worse when this problem affects gameplay. Warhammer: Mechanicus is a real dark-horse of this console generation, a turn-based tactics game that let you tinker with your squad of armoured zealots until they became a gloriously game-breaking cadre of over-powered killing machines. Apparently this wasn't meant to happen, as it's sequel offers far fewer customization options and thus far fewer opportunities to break the game in your favour. Sadly, this actually removes most of the fun from the game as well, resulting in a vastly inferior experience when compared to the magnificently OTT prequel.
Reacting to criticism is fine - necessary, even - but developers also need to have enough confidence and self-awareness to know when their baby starts slipping out of the bathtub.
