19 Things Video Game Fans Are SICK Of

6. AI

Problem number one being that AI should be nowhere near the creative side of the industry.

In the linked article at the end of the previous entry, Capcom made clear their desire to use their RE Engine as the basis for an AI-enhanced game engine. Theoretically the AI will be used to streamline game development by simplifying various aspects of the process, which sounds well and good. But there's a reason the term "AI Slop" exists, and games already have several prominent examples.

The upcoming Crazy Taxi reboot is an obvious offender, as the punk sensibiliites of the original have been washed away by a bland, washed out art style that looks like the product of the Gen AI used in the game's announcement trailer. Then there's the nightmarish AI music video developers Shift Up produced to market its Stellar Blade sequel, where the game's protagonist warbles her way through a terrible song while standard AI screw-ups happen on screen (yes, her outfit does inexplicably have a belly button). And then there's Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024's morbidly depressed AI voices, where (to borrow a line from Rock Paper Shotgun's excellent review) passengers speak "... with all the enthusiasm of a Roomba telling you it’s just finished cleaning the bathroom".

Its examples like this that show why the the phrase "AI art" is an oxymoron, and why gamers are justifiably nervous of the industry's embrace of the contentious technology.
