19 Things Video Game Fans Are SICK Of
4. Yellow Paint
As The Beatles almost sang in Penny Lane, "Yellow paint is on my screen, and in my game".
This problem is an offshoot of the previous one, as developers continue to streamline games by making it increasingly obvious where and what the player should be doing at any given moment. Rather than leaving environmental clues to figure out, or creating intuitive pathways for the player to follow, modern developers are more likely to slap a coat of paint on the surface of an object as shorthand for "Go here, thicko!"
To be fair, there's more to it than developers assuming their audience are attention-deficient thickos (that's more a Netflix thing). As game environments become more realistic (just look at those rock textures in the above photo), it becomes more difficult to highlight important details like handholds and interactive items - hence the decision to slap paint over the parts of the environment the player can interact with.
But that doesn't excuse the fact that yellow paint is a massively distracting cop out. Developers - unless you are specifically marketing your game to people with the spatial awareness of inebriated bricks, please stop Pollocking up your games.
