20 Things We Learned From Gamescom 2016

14. For Honor Might Just Scratch Some Of Your Assassin's Creed Itch

Assassin's Creed should always be associated with stealth over action, but as the series went on - and in particular with AC III's walking tank, Connor - its trailers started to supercut together more and more encounters, brutal finishers and wild melee flurries, all backed by a techno-beat score.

It gave AC a defining style, and its this approach Ubisoft took when showing off the gorgeous combat of For Honor. Playing as either a hulking, axe-wielding Viking, an athletic and Assassin's Creed-like Samurai or an all-round capable Knight, For Honor employs an Infinity Blade-style combat system, where large UI prompts help deflect blows and keep the pace up during battles.

It's almost like an in-depth, combat-heavy Assassin's Creed meets a far more visceral Dynasty Warriors; a franchise that's always been huge in Japan, yet never quite took off in the West. The result is a game that may be light on story or overall drive - outside of "Storm this place and leave none alive" - but if each class plays as good as they look, For Honor will easily be one of 2017's most instantly fun and enjoyable games overall.
