5. The Collector - Darkest Dungeon

Not only stuffed to the brim with enemies that will ruin your day, Darkest Dungeon is a game whose entire design ethos is around ruining your entire week. Part Rogue-like, part Lovecraftian-horror dungeon-crawler and part trauma simulator,  Darkest Dungeon's offers players a singular experience in white-knuckle turn-based combat and bum-clenching tension.

For newcomers and those still in the early game, The Collector is one of the most devious roadblocks the game throws at you. A random encounter mini-boss that can easily put an end to your latest excursion if you aren't prepared, or don't have a solid grasp on how to fight him.

He will continually summon ghostly versions of previously fallen heroes to fight on his behalf, all the while spamming attacks that pile on mental strain, making this a fight that gets worse the longer you're in it. Swift and calculated action is the best way to deal with him, ensuring you get enough damage in early to ward off his barrage of minions.

The only upside is that well-prepared players can get some decent loot-drops from defeating him, which can make the early-game grind that little bit easier. Not by much though, this is still Darkest Dungeon after all...
