15 Video Game Mysteries Answered Years Later

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is one of the most influential SNES titles ever released. Playing as Link, you're tasked with rescuing Zelda from her imprisonment at the hands of an evil sorcerer. Along the way, you encounter plenty of classic Zelda-esque puzzles to solve and baddies to overcome. 

Throughout the game Link can often fall down holes, which transports him to a cave directly beneath wherever the hole was. Occasionally, however, players reported being teleported to a completely different room with no explanation. This small, square room was filled with 45 blue rupees and a message reading ''My name is Chris Houlihan. This is my top secret room.'' The existence of this room, and that message, baffled players worldwide for years, as they wondered who exactly Chris Houlihan was and what the room was meant for.

It turns out, it was a failsafe room that would only be found if the game couldn't internally determine Link's destination. After a whopping 33 years, in 2025, Chris Houlihan's identity was seemingly revealed when YouTuber Kevin Hainline investigated and found that Chris' father had initially won a Nintendo competition, with the prize being the winner's name to appear in a future Nintendo game, although his father apparently asked for his son's name to be used instead. The Chris Houlihan room in A Link to the Past was then named in his honour, potentially ending a mystery that spanned over 3 decades.
