20 Video Game Villains You Couldn’t Wait To Kill
6. Frau Engel - Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (2017)
Recent Wolfenstein titles have delivered similar thrills to the Man in the High Castle, offering a world in which the Nazis won World War II. And the sixth game in the series, perplexingly titled Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, is the point at which the gaming experience matches up with the scope of the concept.
As war vet BJ Blazkowicz, we battle the Nazi regime in the USA, with expansions on the game’s predecessor such as realistic gunplay, a multitude of weaponry, shifting story pathways and a host of compelling characters to keep things ticking over. And who more compelling than Irene Engel?
Originally debuting in Wolfenstein: The New Order, Frau Engel is a high-ranking officer and one of the recent Wolfenstein games' core, overarching enemies, representing the worst of this victorious version of the Reich. She seamlessly transitions from one of the New Order villains to the New Colossus baddie via one key action in the game’s first act: beheading our ally Caroline Becker and making BJ kiss her decapitated head.
Engel is a foaming-at-the-mouth fanatic, made in the classic Nazi mould, and though we have already waited one game to do her the harm, everything she does in Colossus makes us want it more – not least of all decapitating BJ himself (don’t worry; it’s fixable). And when we finally get up close and personal, the game doesn’t skimp, allowing us to put a hatchet in her face and pop it open like a watermelon.
