7. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Link's Awakening was originally released in 1993 for the Game Boy. The game takes place on the mysterious Koholint Island, after Link's boat washes up there. This initially feels like a standard Zelda title setup, as Link is told he needs to visit 8 dungeons, collecting artifacts from each in order to wake a giant creature called the Wind Fish and escape the island.
Mid way through the story though, it is discovered that this is actually significantly different from Link's usual adventures, because Koholint Island isn't actually real. The entire island exists as part of the Wind Fish's dream, and waking the creature up will see the island- and all of the inhabitants Link has met along the way- simply cease to exist.
In a bittersweet turn of events, Link ends up doing exactly that during the game's climax. He wakes the creature and escapes the dream, causing Koholint Island to disappear from existence in the blink of an eye.
