20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)

8. Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2 James

2001's psychological horror Silent Hill 2 starts with ordinary protagonist James Sunderland receiving a letter from his thought-to-be-dead wife Mary, asking him to visit the spooky town of Silent Hill to find her. This sends James spiralling down a rabbit hole of mystery and intrigue, as he tries to piece together what is happening and who sent the letter.

Something isn't adding up in Silent Hill, and as James delves further into the town, confronting its hideous monsters, he begins to question his own mental state. It's safe to say, his instincts are right. It's revealed towards the game's climax that Mary is in fact dead, and, in a cruel twist of fate, James is the one that killed her.

A serious illness had led Mary to spent most of her time suffering, and in an act of frustration and resentment, James covered her face with a pillow and killed her. Such a horrific event led James' mind to go into meltdown, and he suppressed the memory, convincing himself she died from the illness years prior to this. The monsters he was seeing were manifestations of his own guilt and torment. This big reveal was a masterstroke and helped Silent Hill 2 to go down as one of the best psychological horror games of all time.
