20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)

14. Portal

Portal 1
Valve

Portal is a first person puzzle game from developer Valve that initially released in 2007. Gameplay mainly revolves around a device called the portal gun that allows you to create two portals and quickly move from one to the other. This mechanic, while simple, allows for a huge variation of puzzle solving, and was enough to ensure the game (and its sequel which fared even better) is still seen as one of the best puzzle titles of all time.

Playing as a character called Chell, you wake up inside a mysterious lab known as Aperture Science, and are forced to undergo a number of scientific tests. Guiding you through these tests is a mysterious AI known as GLaDOS. With Chell having no idea who or where she is, or why she has to do these tests, GLaDOS is both hers and the player's only source of information right from the get go.

Despite acting like a helpful guide throughout (even offering cake as a reward), as the game continues, GLaDOS begins to act increasingly more suspicious, until it becomes obvious she isn't trying to help at all. She's actually manipulating you into doing her bidding, and plans to eventually kill Chell once she's no longer useful. This revelation caught many off guard, but Portal's dry humour and fun premise proved to turn GLaDOS into a fan-favourite villain rather than a hated figure.
