If you've played or seen XCOM in motion, you'll know the satisfaction of seeing the tide of battle ebb and flow, one step at a time. Well, take that ethos and throw in a bleak Game of Thrones-style tone, a backstory that pits humans and the hulking horn-headed Varl against a seemingly unstoppable force named the Dredge, and you've got Banner Saga; one of the best strategy games to release in quite some time. The kicker that'll really draw you in is down to every party in battle choosing whether to target health or armour - a subtly effective mechanic that means you'll have to either chip away at a boss' maximum defences, before you even have a chance of doing damage. The flip-side is going for health, which is also the attack value - so depleting that means said boss won't be hitting you with as much force next time round - but remember, the armour will get in the way first. There are a handful of other buffing abilities and character traits that open up the strategic side of things too, but mainly what'll hook you is the fantastic branching story, the sublime art style that makes every character memorable, and the 'just one more battle' nature of the addictive combat.
