25 Greatest Console Games Of 2012

11. Halo 4

Claiming to be more oriented around its much darker storyline than its predecessors, Halo 4 is the latest edition to the Halo franchise. The storyline sees Master Chief and Fortana crash land on a strange Forerunner planet, battling against hordes of enemies known as The Prometheans; after years upon years of fighting the Covenant it'll be a refreshing change to battle a new foe. Halo fans - look out for Didact.

12. Mass Effect 3

The simply breathtaking visuals of Mass Effect 3 ensure you'll often find yourself distracted from the gameplay. Dividing opinion everywhere, the tighter storyline and less freedom ensure you'll find those who love this and those who hate it. Not including it in the greatest games of 2012, however, would be blasphemy. The experience is undeniably enhanced for those who have played the previous games, but its format is such that newcomers can fully appreciate and enjoy it too.

13. Borderlands 2

Play as one of four new characters against the incredibly evil mastermind Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2 and find yourself lost in their world of gunplay based RPG. Bigger, crazier and more diverse than the original, Borderlands 2 will give any shooter based RPG a run for its money - if this isn't a contender for your Game of the Year, where have you been?

14. Silent Hill: Downpour

Your survival horror begins after a prison van careers off the road, leaving you stranded to figure out your own way home. Facing mind-bending puzzles are among the least of your worries as you encounter horrific creatures and other terrors, using everyday items to defend your life. The side quests will change depending on your play style, and you'll truly revel in your own fight or flight responses as you experience first hand how they tailor the game.

15. Max Payne 3

An ex-police force member, washed up and addicted to painkillers, Max Payne takes a job protecting the family of Rodrigo Branco in a last ditch attempt to erase his painful past. However, the storyline and events spin out of control and he's found on the streets of the city searching for the truth. Maintaining the mechanics which ensured the previous Max Payne games were remembered, yet modernising them to compete with the game's competitors is a genius move by Rockstar. The impressive portrayal of the setting and storyline ensure this is a game that keeps you glued until the end.
