30 Best Video Games Of All Time

10. The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past

Ocarina may have adapted one of the best gameplay formulas in the medium to 3D, but it had to be perfected in the first place.

A Link to the Past was the third Legend of Zelda and the first on the SNES. Coming after one landmark original and a divisive, overly experimental followup that was way too hard for any sane human, LTTP dialled things back a notch. Yes, there would be dungeons, an open-world and discoverable secrets at every turn, but with a refined difficulty curve and more responsive combat, you could take them all in without fear of perishing quite so much.

With such a solid gameplay foundation in place, it was off to the races. A Link to the Past includes everything from some of the best dungeon designs in the series to bosses that are a joy to figure out and defeat, an art style that showed just what the SNES could do, and a progression across items and weapons that means by the time you're face to face with Ganon, you're ready to save the word with one swing of a sword.

It might not be the absolute best Zelda ever (we'll get to that), but as one hell of a meticulously designed action-puzzler with RPG elements not faltered by Nintendo still getting their heads around 3D like some spots of Ocarina of Time, A Link to the Past is a masterful creation in every respect.
