30 Greatest Video Games Of All Time

21. Mario Kart

Yes, the original Mario Kart, from all the way back in 1992. Whilst there are certain modern-day graphics-lovers that'll refuse to play anything that's not shinier than spilt bottle of polish, the core tenets of what would define the kart-racing genre are just as enjoyable here as they were 22 years ago - and that's not to mention the cavalcade of loveable characters that pad out the roster. We all had our favourites, and even now like a great film you can revisit and take it in not just for its initial appeal, but also by appreciating the legacy it spawned - Mario Kart just oozes innovation and mass appeal. Sure if you have access to the latest Mario Kart 8 it's highly doubtful newcomers are going to pick this primitively-pixellated brethren instead, but when you think about just how endlessly replayable this was, alongside how remarkable it is that such an old title gave still gives us so much, it's truly revolutionary in a way that was lightyears ahead of its time.
