30 Greatest Video Games Of All Time

26. Sonic The Hedgehog

They try and try to revamp Sonic and make him 'work' in 2014, but no amount of redesigns, taped-up sneakers or 3D platforming reinventions is going to change what was a perfect formula way back in 1991. No, instead you need only return to the classic nought-to-lightspeed gameplay and feel the instantly-infectious ring-collection sound bite along with that Green Hill Zone music to know where the series hit the ground sprinting. With platform mechanics that were so incredibly proficient yet also knew when to ease up on the spikes and enemy-placement so you could let-fly across a huge expanse of land, the dynamic switching of carefully exploring each crevice of the gameworld along with nabbing a power-up and tearing off into the distance has never been beat. Sonic: Generations would come close at at least modernising the perfected Sonic experience, but there's nothing even with an extra lick of paint that the original Blue Blur didn't nail perfectly.
