5 Great Horror Moments In Non-Horror Games
2. Upper Cathedral Ward (Bloodborne)
Another FromSoft entry, but this one is definitely more suitable for Halloween than the reptilian behemoth. The Upper Cathedral Ward area is the closest that humanity ever came to having true congress with the Great Ones, and that fact alone resonates throughout the entire area, all the way into the primal recesses of the player's brain screaming at them to run away in terror.
Bloodborne as a whole obviously has a horror angle, but it is much more of a third-person action game where you battle beasts with varying degrees of success. Upper Cathedral Ward is there to crank the horror dial up to eleven. It's one of few areas in the game to have an ambient song play in it, appropriately titled the Soothing Hymn, a chorus of mournful wails that chill any hunter unlucky enough to pass through.
The noises of the brainsuckers, the cold blue eyes of the large werewolf-like creatures that dwell in the great hall; even the chandelier bit (if you know, you know) alone is worth ten jump scares as it plunges the player into frightening darkness.
When it really wants to, Bloodborne excels at horror, and Upper Cathedral Ward is a stark reminder of that.
