5 Great Horror Moments In Non-Horror Games

3. Stalingrad - Call Of Duty: World At War

A different sort of scary for this entry, one that's unfortunately all too real. World at War perfectly encapsulates the horrors of World War Two throughout its campaign, and nowhere is this more pertinent than in the first chapter of the Russian campaign, Stalingrad.

For historical context, Operation Barbarossa was the Nazis' attempt to besiege the Soviet Union by invading on the Eastern Front, in a conflict widely regarded as the bloodiest of the entire war. The scale of such an attack cannot be understated, and World at War's haunting introduction to the Soviet campaign sells it incredibly well.

Eerie, jaw-dropping, a powerful reminder of a dark chapter in history... it's all of these things, and hits definitively with the horror punch in such a genuine manner. Awaking in an ocean of corpses, the Luftwaffe looming overhead and the Axis proceeding through the city, you're coached by Viktor Reznov how to snipe nearby Wehrmacht troops and lead a Soviet resistance to the Axis domination of Stalingrad.

World at War is held up by COD fans as the pinnacle of the series' historically-based outings, and this pedestal stands strong with the weight of missions such as Stalingrad.
