I can't think of many games that come under more media scrutiny than the uber-popular Grand Theft Auto. The series is often brought up in any video game violence debate because it's incredibly well-known and was indeed one of the first real open-world games in which you could kill civilians as you please. The thing that separates GTA from the usual video game is that it is simply way too popular for any slanderous comments or media negativity to have even a tiny dent on the game's image or sales figures. Indeed every iteration of GTA to date as received negativity from politicians or media in some fashion, it's all but expected. Possibly the most criticized version however, has been GTA: San Andreas. Back when the game was released in 2005 Hilary Clinton went on a tirade, complaining about why the game should have a more mature rating. She advocated that the game was terrible for children, "There is no doubting the fact that the widespread availability of sexually explicit and graphically violent video games makes the challenge of parenting much harder". Now as someone who played his brothers copy of the game at the age of 12, I can safely say I've never caused any problems for my parents nor anyone else I've known. She even said that the game encourages you to "have sex with prostitutes and then murder them." Once again, apart from the removed mini-game (Hot Coffee) that allowed users to have sex, I can't recall a time in the game when I was ever encouraged to do that. And once again, it was a mature game for adults, children shouldn't be playing it. Hypocrisy I know, but we all played games when we were too young and the vast vast majority of us are completely fine. Needless to say Clinton's claims did nothing to hinder the sales, popularity or critical reception of San Andreas, it sold massive numbers and the franchise has went from strength to strength. Yes GTA's Hot Coffee sex simulator was stupid and had no place in the game, which is why Rockstar removed it, but to claim children had access to it and that the game encouraged you to have sex, was an outright lie. The reality is, if a parent was that concerned about what their child plays they wouldn't buy them the game, or at least take a look at their collection from time to time. But to attempt to ban it for all the people who are of age and can make decisions for themselves is simply censorship of the highest and stupidest level.
