In Sly 2, players follow Sly, Bentley, and Murray as they perform a series of heists to retrieve the stolen body parts of long-time robotic nemesis, Clockwerk. Working in harmony, they steal multiple Clockwerk parts with little resistance. However, at the conclusion of chapter three, the gang is dealt a crippling blow that flips their confidence on its head.

With the help of Constable Neyla, Sly and Murray rush off to fight the boss of chapter three. Neyla, up to this point in the game, has played fast and loose with the law. Meaning, they're perfectly okay with bending the rules as long as it leads to the arrest of a criminal.

Naturally, this puts Neyla on a collision course with Sly Cooper on multiple occasions and the two often find their goals aligned, so they resort to working with each other when appropriate. With their banter alone during their missions together, there's a sense the duo appreciates the change of pace and would even consider pursuing something romantically.

So, imagine Sly's surprise during the heat of chapter three's final battle when Constable Neyla betrays him! She calls in the leader of the police organization, Interpol, and together have not only Sly and Murray arrested but also her partner Carmelita who Neyla claims to have assisted Sly Cooper in his heists. When the dust settles, Bentley is the Cooper Gang's sole remaining member and the weight of his allies' freedom falls directly onto his small shoulders.

Chapter four, Jailbreak, begins with the player controlling Bentley and for the first time, without the aid of Sly or Murray. Despite creating the plans, Bentley remained a character who sat on the sidelines allowing his own fears of jumping into the field to overtake his ability to help his friends. In Sly 2 Band of Thieves and in the Jailbreak chapter specifically, we see this once fearful character jump into the fray and face his greatest fear head-on.
