7. As Complicated As ABC (1937)
The ABC, or Atanasoff–Berry Computer, was the first to go digital. It had an electronic memory, so there was no need for clumsy cogs and moving parts. This dainty prototype weighed in at only 320 kg - small enough to fit in the back of a truck.
That’s nanotechnology 1930s style.
The ABC could calculate around four complex operations per minute, which for the time was revolutionary. So why didn't Turing make use of digital? Tragically the ABC was built in a basement at Iowa State College and abandoned soon after. It doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
