8 Details That Will Make Resident Evil 7 Truly Terrifying

1. VHS Tapes

Resident Evil has always contained additional story through the use of diaries, notes, and photographs. These range from the deadly serious, offering up exposition, through to the straight-up campy or amusing - such as the awesome Keeper's Diary from the original game that featured the increasingly mad ramblings of the mansion's infected groundskeeper, culminating in the famous "4 Itchy Tasty" line.

Notes and photos can still be found in Resident Evil 7, but an interesting addition to the formula is VHS tapes. Finding these tapes and then using them at TVs, gives access to playable sections that mechanically work like a found-footage style horror film.

These sections give exposition, allow you a look ahead at an upcoming area, and can be straight up terrifying as many of the many characters featured within the tape are extremely temporary and often suffer gruesome fates.

The ones featured in gameplay demos so far are a great taste of what's to come, and are a glimpse in to the possibilities of standalone horror sections lie ahead in the final game.
