8 Famous Video Game Characters Created By Accident

2. Palette-swapped Fighters - Mortal Kombat Series

The term "palette swap" is almost synonymous with Mortal Kombat these days. Due to the technical limitations of the time, the original games in the series featured a roster of fighters of whom many were just a recolouring of main character Scorpion.

Sub Zero, Rain, Reptile, Noob Saibot...the list goes on.

Perhaps the most intriguing of these, however, is the story of Ermac, whose name literally originates from an abbreviation of "error macro." The word supposedly appeared among the list of fighters on the earliest arcade versions of the game, and piqued players' curiosity to the point where a whole urban legend about a secret red-clad ninja came to be.

Although the developers tried to debunk this myth for quite some time, it seems they eventually caved and started to go along with it too, as Ermac is now his very own fleshed-out character within the Mortal Kombat universe.

Just goes to show that glitches can pay off sometimes, right?
