8 Great Video Games Remembered For ONE Thing
7. Press F To Pay Respects - Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
2014's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was largely praised by critics as a return to form for the franchise following the underwhelming Ghosts, with many finding the sci-fi setting refreshing and lauding the more fluid movement capabilities allowed by the player's exo suit.
But for as successfully as it rejuvenated the flagging Call of Duty formula, Advanced Warfare will always be "best" remembered as the game that gave the world the "Press F to pay respects" meme.
Early on in the game's single-player campaign, players attend the funeral of villain Jonathan Irons' (Kevin Spacey) son Will, and as they approach the coffin, they're prompted to press a context button to pay their respects.
This was immediately ridiculed by critics and players alike, who felt that it basically took the series' oft-criticised on-rails, prompt-driven gameplay to a level of self-parody, in turn conflicting with the somber tone of the scene.
And so, it quickly became an Internet meme in its own right far detached from Call of Duty itself.
Today, over a decade later, it's still common for people to write "F" in response to news of something tragic, whether sarcastically or sincerely.
But if you can look past this flabbergastingly tone-deaf moment, Advanced Warfare remains one of the stronger entries in the entire Call of Duty franchise.
