8 Horror Video Games That Broke The 4th Wall

7. Doki Doki Literature Club

I still get chills when I think about Doki Doki Literature Club, as never has a game been so unassuming at first glance before turning into pure nightmare fuel.

The pretence of a high school dating sim absolutely nosedives the moment that one of the main cast ends up killing themselves. At first you can't entirely believe it's happened, which makes the subsequent fourth wall shattering moment of another club member telling you to delete that character from the game like a one-two punch to the chest.

Playing through Doki Doki will drop all pretence of being "just a game" from that moment on, and while it might not sound horrifying, having one of the members confess their love to you the player, rather than you the character is so uncomfortable I had to switch it off for a while.

Even upon returning this wasn't the last of the meta horror, as you had to effectively root out the evil from within the game files itself, making you question where the boundaries of this horror title lay. If indeed there are any at all.
