8 Major Worries For The Nintendo Switch In 2018
3. Can The First-Party Momentum Continue?
Nintendo showed its hand nice and early for the Switch's launch. Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey singlehandedly cemented the console as a must-buy bit of kit, with the gap between both filled with other niceties like Splatoon 2 and surprise hit ARMS.
However, has the Switch reached its peak already by offering two games based on Nintendo's biggest franchises in its first year?
After all, mainline entries like these generally only tend to get one iteration per generation, so it's going to be left to the Big N's other first-party properties to keep the engine running. Cue the arrival of spin-offs à la Mario Tennis Aces and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker which, while acceptable, do nothing to satiate the hunger for bonafide entries.
Metroid Prime 4, Pokémon Switch and the fresh announcement of a new Smash Bros. are all on the cards for a future release, of course, but none have been locked in for a launch within the next 12 months, let alone nine.
If Nintendo's to leave the console on life support for the majority of 2018, so be it, but here's hoping at least one of those big hitters makes it in time for the Christmas period.
