8 Smart Video Games With Incredibly Dumb Twists
5. Final Fantasy 8 - Plot Kompression
Many internet lists will tell you that Final Fantasy 10 contains the worst twist in the series, citing the revelation that the entire plot was a dream. This never actually happened, although bad translation is partly to blame here. A little digging online for writing by smarter and more dedicated fans than me will teach you that Tidus was actually a summon, similar to the Aeons. It’s, uh, complicated. Go look it up.
So, that in mind, Final Fantasy 8 takes the crown for the series’ dumbest twist, when it’s revealed that all the central characters actually grew up together at the same orphanage, but forgot because they have a bad case of monster-brain. Obviously, amnesia is a bit tired as a device, but the real problem here is how it shrinks the story’s scope. The potential richness offered by six individual backstories is all smushed together into a single, chokingly plot-driven revelation, and the scale of the whole thing is fed through a narrative can crusher as a result.
