8 Surprising Video Game Villain Turns You Never Saw Coming
1. Comstock - Bioshock: Infinite
Going into Bioshock: Infinite, pretty much everyone expected to be treated to another twist on the level of Frank Fontaine's now-iconic "would you kindly?" brainwashing of the original game. Despite the pressure and the expectation though, the developers at Irrational Games somehow delivered yet another rug-pulling moment that lived up to the hype.
Though there's far more to it than I can cover here - including infinite dimensions, time travel and giant robo-birds - the crux of the twist came down to main antagonist Comstock also being the protagonist, Booker. The catalyst of him going evil came after he was injured in the Battle of Wounded Knee, with the soldier either accepting a baptism and starting a new life based in religious rhetoric, or turning his back and losing himself to gambling and addiction depending on the dimension.
This moment was pivotal in essentially creating two version of the same man, one who would embrace his role as a prophet and create a floating racist haven in the sky, while the other would lose his daughter to his own vices. In a way both are pretty dire, but the latter is the only option that made the road to redemption possible.
