8 Times Video Games Told You You Were Safe (And LIED)

4. The Back Hall - Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia: The Dark Descent ranks among the most stressful and sanity-eroding survival horror games ever made, and so when it offers up a seemingly safe hub area called the Back Hall, it's basically impossible not to take a long, deep breath.

This almost relentlessly anxiety-inducing experience at least granted players the mercy of a safe room, right?

The Back Hall has tons of light and space, there are no enemies allowed, and it's even got nicely serene piano music. Just forget about that creepy fountain and it's all good.

But a little later on, this safe space will be invaded by the game's primary antagonist, The Shadow - an ill-intentioned, invisible entity. Beyond stalking you, it'll also fill the hall with a flesh-like substance and turn the water in the fountain into blood, because why the hell wouldn't it?

In the stead of ensuring the player never got too familiar with their surroundings, this cheeky gambit absolutely worked, even if it was agonising to see this place of refuge turned so horrible.
