8 Video Game Moments That Made You Go....WHAT?!

2. The Fake Out Ending - Ghosts 'N Goblins

Capcom

The Ghosts 'n Goblin games are some of the most challenging, rewarding, and downright strange titles you might ever have the pleasure of coming across. Built from the ground up to be punishing at every step, the franchise has seen routine interest from the speedrunning community thanks to the sheer amount of precision needed to even get through the game once let alone in one sitting.

And yet Capcom clearly wasn't content with slapping you in the face with endlessly respawning enemies, and dangerous platform navigation, because in the original title for the NES you would experience a true moment of frustration if you completed the title without using the Holy Shield weapon to defeat Satan.

Not that you'd ever know to do this, but beating the final boss without the weaker, slower firing weapon would lead to a title card saying something to the effect of "wheeey good going lad, but here's the rub, Satan's been a cheeky whippet and this is actually just an illusion, beat the game again and don't mess up this time. See ya!"

I can almost remember the sound of the controller crunching in my hand just seeing this image again.
