2. Remnant: From The Ashes

Remnant From the Ashes
Gunfire Games

'It's just like Dark Souls!'

An accurate (and totally dismissive) description? Well sorta, but not really. Remnant: From the Ashes does share DNA with the Souls series in terms of indirect storytelling and a preference for obtuse multiplayer systems, but ironically, these borrowed ideas are some of the game's weakest ingredients.

Remnant truly shines when developer Gunfire Games decides it cares not for copying what's worked in the past and starts ingratiating the players with weird and wonderful ideas. A hybrid of weighty melee combat and over-the-shoulder gunplay à la The Division, From the Ashes truly comes into its own as soon as its trite post-apocalyptic Earth setting gives way to a multi-dimensional adventure all about hunting for awesome loot.

There's no numbing grind for incrementally superior (but borderline identical) gear to suffer through here.
