9 Best Hidden Gem Video Games Of 2019

1. Blasphemous

Blasphemous character
Team 17

Borrowing the hopeless atmosphere and currency systems of FromSoftware's Dark Souls series and built around the ever-popular Metroidvania formula, Blasphemous' bleak world makes any of Mel Gibson's religiously contentious works look like a Pixar flick by comparison.

Drenched in blood, gore and unsettling iconography, the luxurious nature - both mechanically and aesthetically - of The Game Kitchen's debut title has the hallmarks of a well-funded indie (there's an oxymoron for you) when in reality, it was crafted from a modest Kickstarter budget.

If you've even a passing interest in indirect, alternative storytelling and weighty combat, Blasphemous deserves your utmost attention, if only so you can contribute to the ongoing discussion surrounding its quizzical narrative.
