8. Hotshot Racing

From Forza Horizon getting increasingly OTT to Burnout Paradise being remastered and soaring to the top of the UK sales chart, it feels in many ways like arcade racing is coming back.

Step forward then, Hotshot Racing.

Feeling like a homage and living combination of Ridge Racer, Burnout and Daytona, Sumo Digital's polygonal-adjacent Hotshot Racing is just a blast.

The commentator shouting "Checkpoint!" as you whiz past the competition with a nitro boost. The huge drifts where you're practically sideways flying into a corner. The last minute jockey for position as you burn past the pack in a tightly calculated move, not having to bother whatsoever with any "simulation aspects" of the race, as you emerge victorious.

Hotshot Racing is a love letter to an era of racers upended by the likes of Gran Turismo. They were somewhat brought back by Burnout and Need for Speed in the 2000s, but have lain dormant for practically the entire eighth generation.

I could not be happier a dev team took this on, especially when the final product is so damn fun.
