9 Critically-Panned Video Games That Players Love
5. Verdun
Metacritic Score: 46
Before Battlefield 1 came out and stole the limelight, Verdun was proving that World War 1 online shooters could still be successful in the sea of futuristic multiplayer titles that were releasing at the same time. Establishing the basis for a completely different type of competitive play, the shooter ditched the frantic, instant action of Call of Duty in favour of slow and considered assaults where a couple of rounds was enough to stop players in their tracks.
Attempting to capture the intensity and the futility of WW1, Verdun came up trumps thanks to its deeply demanding combat system. Even once Battlefield dropped and diluted its novelty value, the shooter still proved itself as a worthy adversary thanks to its completely different take on the historical period.
Unfortunately, critics didn't give it the time of day when it first released, criticising the game's admittedly low production values and writing off its multiplayer firefights as being too niche to succeed. Fans on the other hand couldn't disagree more, and even a few years after getting their mitts on it, Verdun remains as frustratingly rewarding as ever.
