9 Video Games That Played With Your Emotions

4. The Last Of Us

The Last of Us is a horror game, but the fear in it isn't just borne from the Lovecraftian mutant humans hunting you down - it's also the fear of losing someone close to you.

Naughty Dog's game focuses on the central dynamic between its two main characters, Joel and Ellie. Poor old Joel has the emotional baggage of losing his daughter years before, and sees Ellie almost as a surrogate for her. But his desire to protect Ellie at all costs is extremely problematic for the rest of the world.

With Ellie potentially being a cure for the mutant disease, she's willing to sacrifice her own life in order for an antidote to be created. Joel knowingly destroys that chance of a cure but worse than that, he bold-faced lies to Ellie about it.

The whole mess is affecting for the player because The Last of Us isn't a Telltale game, and you can't change Joel's decisions. You have to play on as he makes his choices, despite your reservations.

The Last of Us never lets Joel off the hook though, and with the upcoming sequel, you know that things can only get worse for his and Ellie's now fractured relationship.
