Avengers Review: 3 Ups & 8 Downs
3. Important Story Beats & Thematics Are Forgotten
Avengers' story is by far its most considered aspect. From Sandra Saad's Kamala to Nolan North's Iron Man and the general backdrop of accidentally-superhuman-ised civilians becoming second class citizens in the time the group was disbanded, there's a lot of rich thematic material to flesh out.
Sadly... the game fundamentally can't do that, because this' "story" takes place across the next few years.
What's here then, is very much a primer for multiplayer - a way to spin wheels in a fashion that certainly opens strong, but quickly devolves into repetitive mission structures where you're only playing to see the next cutscene.
By the end, it serves the same purpose as Destiny 2's "story" - a way to narrativise your push into grinding through multiplayer missions. Everything regarding how Kamala felt about gaining powers after idolising the Avengers for so long, what a potential cure means to her, how the Inhuman rebellion is viewed after the final fight etc., is completely forgotten about.
Right now we have no idea how Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix will tell a story across the coming years, but make no mistake:
All of this is a first act masquerading as a "worthwhile campaign", and everything is yet to come.
