Before GTA V: 10 Classic GTA Features That Caused Major Controversy

4. Swearing

Another age old element of the franchise, you could even argue that the entire bar for swearing in games was set by R* (among other obviously) over the course of GTA's history. If you were around for the original GTA, you'll remember that even it featured foul-mouthery, although thanks to stricter censorship laws such language was unceremoniously bleeped. But as the series wore on, as the characters enjoyed full vocal performances, the language got worse and worse until... well, put it this way, there's probably more swearing in a GTA game than in a Roy Chubby Brown show. And somewhere along the line, the conservative world got it into their heads that foul language, when heard by a child or youngster, instantly transforms them into marauding criminals, desperate junkies or otherwise undesirable elements of society. Of course this is probably about as far from the truth as one can get but as I say, concerned parties rarely find the courage to look inwards for the source of their child-related woes. As a result, GTA constantly comes under flack for its completely uninhibited use of adult language. One thing I will say is this: I f***ing swear all the f***ing time and I'm still yet to receive my first criminal charge (I once got caught stealing golf balls from the local driving range and they put me in the 'banned' book but that's about it...)
