Before GTA V: 10 Classic GTA Features That Caused Major Controversy

5. Grand Theft Auto

GTA, the gaming franchise, has existed for so long now, enjoyed such dizzying levels of popularity and acclaim that you might have actually forgotten that 'Grand Theft Auto' is actually a legal term for the theft of a vehicle. You must remember that back in the Wild West days, theft of a horse (for all intents and purposes the 'car' of the period) was punishable by death. These days, sentencing is of course much less harsh, but theft of a vehicle is still obviously highly illegal and often considered one of the most vile criminal acts possible, that is before you arrive at kidnapping, rape and murder of course. So with that in mind, you can imagine the reaction of the conservative world when a video game was suddenly released which featured that very act as a central gameplay mechanic. Yep, that's right, complete ructions. As a result, the original GTA struggled at first to secure a proper worldwide release, getting itself condemned in Britain, Germany and France and banned outright in Brazil. Video games rarely come as controversial. And each GTA game since, to a much lesser extent, has been criticised by hundreds of thousands of concerned parties for its unrelentingly glamorised (and totally satisfying I might add) representation of car theft.
