3. The Soviet War In Afghanistan

What Was It? The Soviets War in Afghanistan was a massive blunder by the Soviet Union that in some historians eyes marked the final nail in the coffin of the concept of the two superpowers. It began after a process in Afghanistan to violently remove much of the religious intellgentsia from positions of power which they held for centuries in the mid 1970s. This led to a massive backlash from the rural areas of the nation to which the government found itself hopeless to control. They called upon the aid of the Soviet Union who invaded Afghanistan to attempt to quell the notion of a coup from the rebels. The Soviets soon found themselves totally ill-equipped to handle the terrain of Afghanistan and the rebels, now dubbed the mujahadeen and aided by Western powers, ran rings around their cumbersome platoons. Why Would COD Never Happen Here? First of all, the war did not make a difference in a way that any COD maker would like- the mujahadeen were victorious against the Soviet powers- but those same mujahadeen would begin fighting amongst themselves until the winners would become the Taliban. Furthermore, much of the tactics that Osama Bin Laden learnt were picked up during this war, so the concept of this war being used as a background may be too delicate for any budding story writer. Plus- yet again- no Americans.
