Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Review - 6 Ups & 5 Downs

A return to form... with some issues.

Infinity Ward

Infinity Ward's quasi-reboot of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise is out now, and though the game was subject to a level of pre-release controversy now typical for the AAA shooter series, the end result has been warmly received by most critics so far.

Is Modern Warfare a great game? No. Is it one of the best entries into the Call of Duty franchise? Probably not.

But it does serve as a welcome palette cleanser after last year's disappointingly cynical and piecemeal Black Ops IIII, which lacked a campaign mode entirely while training its focus on Battle Royale shenanigans.

Modern Warfare is a more traditional Call of Duty game and all the better for it, touting a tight campaign and dynamic multiplayer, even if Infinity Ward has also made a number of baffling creative and design decisions which undeniably hold the game back.

It'll be interesting to see if the developer can whip the game into shape over the coming months, though many of these issues are so thoroughly baked into the end-product that, sadly, there's little hope.

Even with the Call of Duty fanbase being famously tough to please, Modern Warfare is sure to be one of the series' more divisive recent offerings, despite its clear effort to strip back the silliness and deliver a more "classic" experience...
