3. Crafting Upsets The Balance

As mentioned above, whether you'll like crafting or not largely depends on why you're playing Dead Space 3 to begin with. The mind-boggling array of options allows players to create some pretty wacky weapons combinations, which will be of considerable appeal to those wanting a frantic action game, but not so much to those who favour the more pared-down suspense and creepiness of the previous titles. Part of the problem with crafting is not just that it can make you ridiculously over-powered and essentially allow you to Superman your way through portions of the game, but that it gives you too much too early. Players are allowed to tinker with damage upgrades not long into the game, giving them an early foothold on the various enemies they'll encounter, a lead that probably won't be lost for the vast majority of the game. The first Dead Space was especially all about a lack of ammo and having to be resouceful, even resorting to close-quarters stomping when the situation got truly dire, but here, you're so well taken care of that this heart-pounding necessity rarely abounds.
