Both Microsoft and Sony have treated the imminent announcement of the next generation of gaming in a bit of a strange way. Instead of denying they're working on anything and then revealing all at a grand showcase, the two companies have openly admitted they're working on new machines, with Sony's Mark Cerny even having a sit-down conversation with Wired to frankly discuss specs.

Consequently, there's no better time for Microsoft to highlight their own next-gen plans on a grand stage. While they might not have a console to show off yet, by capitalising on the lack of Sony at E3, they could give their console a proper reveal without having anyone stealing their thunder. All rumours point towards next-gen consoles coming next year, and now would be a perfect time to give fans a taste of what they can look forward to.

The stage is there for Microsoft to take, and it would be an easy win to get all the headlines focusing on them.
