When the original Samurai Shodown released in 1993, not only did it look like a classic anime brought to life, but it also subverted the red-hot fighting game genre. Instead of stringing together an endless series of combos, it was about blocking quick and hitting at just the hit time to land a massive blow.
Since the series has persisted into a convoluted continuity that never really matched the power of the first - now, the creators want to bring it back to basics with this reboot.
The events are set before the first game, with most of the original fighters back. There is also a transparent priority on delivering the old-school flavour but with modern polish.
