Aitor Karanka has built a solid Middlesbrough unit since rocking up at the Riverside in 2013. Acquiring Valencia right-back Antonio Barragan will only serve to bolster his already meaty defensive options.

The north-east outfit have been the defensive supremos in the Championship for each of the last two seasons and will look to continue their defensive work this season. Prepare for legions of frustrated teams struggling to break down the cohesive Middlesbrough wall this forthcoming campaign.

Middlesbrough kept 25 clean sheets last season, which included a six-game run not seen since December 2003. Picking up Barragan for such a cheap fee is a snip, especially when the club can boast such an immaculate defensive record.

The 29-year-old is highly-rated on the continent, and Liverpool were accredited with an interest in their youth product before they plumped for the far more expensive option in Nathaniel Clyne last summer. While not many could emerge from Valencia's haphazard 15/16 season with any real credit, especially after a certain British pundit was through with them, Barragan's reputation went unharmed.
