Next up left-midfielders and wingers - necessarily a little younger than some of the other players on the list, thanks to the faster pace needed to play that position (at least in an attacking team) and the higher energy levels needed to police the entire flank, attacking and offering support to the left-back.
13. Royston Drenthe
Age: 25 Nation: Holland A controversial figure, with something of a reputation, Drenthe is still a massive talent, with the ability to change games and to offer strength and versatility to the left side of midfield. He will undoubtedly have a lot of suitors at the start of the game, and though he should ask for about £18k a week, it will probably require a little more to get him to agree to sign for you (assuming you have the financial clout). Definitely worth it, and one who could play first-team for a long time.
14. Kanga Akale
Age: 31 Nation: Ivory Coast Capable of playing on both wings, the quick former Lens, Auxerre and Marseille attacking midfielder recently played in Greece, but left after playing 9 league games for Panetolikos. He might not be quite as young as Drenthe, Akale's versatility - he used to play as a striker, and can also play midfield makes him a strong option for a squad addition.
Other free left-midfielders: Boudewijn Zenden (35), Simone Del Nero (31), SPas Delev (22).
